Most organizations don't have the structures and practices to bring out the best thinking. What most gets in the way are known thinking inhibitors, such as competition, self doubt, perfectionism, criticism, formality, ridicule and others... And often lacking are the known thinking enhancers, such as listening with passion, respect, trusting our own intelligence, freedom from fear, focus on seeking the best idea over trying to win, ease, appreciation, encouragement.
At Leading While Human we are passionately committed to helping organizations build thinking capabilities that elevate innovation, collaboration and belonging to a whole new level.
Listening without interruption and with interest in where the person will go next in their thinking.
Regarding each other as thinking peers, giving equal time to think. Even in a hierarchy people can be equal as thinkers.
Discarding internal urgency.
Noticing what is good and saying it. The human mind works best in the presence of appreciation.
Giving courage to go to the unexplored edge of thinking by ceasing competition as thinkers.
Welcoming the release of emotion. Unexpressed feelings can inhibit good thinking.
Absorbing all the relevant facts. Full and accurate information results in intellectual integrity.
Committing to freedom from untrue assumptions driving prejudice.
Freeing the human mind of untrue assumptions lived as true.
Producing a physical environment – the room, the listener, your body – that says, ‘You matter’.
